Safareig: the Catalan word behind our laundry's name

Safareig is the Catalan word for the old communal washhouse. Here's what it means, how to say it, and why our laundrette in L'Escala carries the name.

Safareig self-service laundry in L'Escala, Costa Brava

If you’ve wandered around L’Escala with a bag of holiday laundry, you may have stopped in front of our sign and wondered what that word could possibly mean. Safareig, pronounced roughly sa-fa-RETCH, is one of those Catalan words with no tidy English translation. It also happens to be one of the loveliest, and it explains exactly why a laundry would choose it as a name.

A stone basin at the heart of the village

A safareig is the traditional public washhouse of Catalan villages: a communal basin of water, usually fed by a spring or an irrigation channel, with sloping stone slabs around the edge. That’s where people scrubbed their clothes with soap, beat them against the stone and rinsed them. Some stood in the open air, others had a roof and pillars to keep off the sun and the rain.

Washing there was hard work. You arrived loaded with baskets of laundry and spent hours kneeling by cold water, scrubbing against the stone. But the safareig had something no washing machine has ever had: it was where the whole village met.

”Fer safareig”, the expression that survived

Out of all those hours of shared work came an expression Catalans still use every day. Fer safareig literally means “to do the washing”, but what it actually means is to gossip: to chat about other people’s lives, pass rumours along, catch up on everything going on in town. It makes perfect sense: while the clothes were rinsing, the conversation never stopped. The safareig was the local newspaper, the radio and the village group chat, all at once.

When a laundry word ends up meaning “talking about people”, you know just how social that corner of the village really was.

You can still find them

Once running water reached people’s homes, the washhouses slowly fell silent. But they haven’t disappeared: many villages in the Empordà, the region around L’Escala, still keep theirs, often restored and looked after as a small piece of local heritage. Stroll through the right old quarter and you’ll come across one: the calm basin, the slabs polished by decades of washing, the cool shade and that particular echo that makes it feel as if the conversations never quite left.

They’re worth a short stop. Modest little buildings, and yet few places tell you so clearly how a village once lived.

The safareig of today

And here’s the bridge that brings it home for us. A self-service laundry is, when you think about it, the safareig of the 21st century: the place in town where the clothes come out clean, with machines instead of stone slabs and hot water instead of spring water. And with one thing that hasn’t changed at all: while the drum spins, people still stand around chatting.

That’s why, when we opened a laundry in L’Escala, the name was the easiest decision of all: Safareig.

We have two shops, both open 365 days a year from 8 am to 10 pm: Safareig, at Avinguda de Montgó 2, and Safareig XL, at Closa del Llop 107, with big machines for duvets and bulky loads. Drop by with a bag of laundry and you’ll see the tradition is alive and well: spotless washing and, if you feel like it, a little safareig while you wait. You’ll find everything else on our homepage and on the prices page.
