How often to change sheets and towels in a holiday rental
A practical guide for owners of rural houses and holiday apartments: how often to change the bed linen and towels, between stays and during long stays.
In a rural house or a holiday apartment, the bed linen and towels say more about your place than the photos do. A guest forgives a lot, but not a towel that smells damp. Here are the routines that actually work, without overdoing it.
Between stays: always fresh linen
The one rule with no exceptions: every new guest gets clean sheets and towels. It doesn’t matter whether the last one stayed a night or a week. Everything gets changed:
- Sheets, pillowcases and the duvet cover.
- All the towels, including the bath ones that “look unused”.
- Bath mats and kitchen cloths if the place provides them.
During long stays
When someone stays more than three or four nights, it’s worth offering a mid-stay change. As a rough guide:
- Sheets: every 3 to 4 days.
- Towels: every 2 to 3 days, or on request.
Many guests would rather not change them every day, for convenience (and to save water). The honest approach is to make the option clear: “let us know and we’ll swap them”. That way you cut down on work and show you care.
What the guest expects
Bed linen and towels are among the first things people touch when they arrive. They’re the difference between “this is clean” and “this smells off”. In reviews, clean linen carries a lot of weight:
- Whites with no stains or yellow rings.
- No musty smell or burnt-fabric-softener smell.
- Fluffy towels, not scratchy from too many low-temperature washes.
For hygiene, bed linen and towels are washed at 60 °C. That’s where many home washing machines fall short in high season.
High season: logistics rule
In July and August, with same-day check-outs and check-ins, the bottleneck isn’t cleaning the house: it’s having the linen washed, dried and pressed in time. Two things help:
- Keep a double stock of bed sets and towels per bed. While one set is in the house, another is ready to go.
- Outsource the washing so you don’t depend on your own machine or the weather to dry.
If handing off that part suits you, with our laundry service for rural houses we collect, wash at the right temperature and return the linen ready to make up the beds.
